Josie turned away from the sink and leaned against the counter. "Life is pretty empty without love. What do you have to look forward to, day after day, D.J.? Going to work, saving the world from the bad guys, then coming home to an empty apartment, waiting for the next night, when you can go back to work and start all over again?"
"It's my life. I like it this way."
"Do you? Do you really? If you ever took the time to look inside yourself, I wonder what you'd find."
D.J. didn't like the way the conversation was headed. A buzzing, like the static of a television after the station's gone off the air, played in her ears, telling D.J. she ran on her final reserve of energy. Serious sleep deprivation lurked just around the corner. She didn't have the brain power left to deal with angels anymore today. "I've had enough of this. Enough of you. I haven't slept for over twenty-four hours. I'm going to bed."
D.J. left the kitchen, slamming and then locking her bedroom door behind her. She went into the bathroom and grabbed her toothbrush. When she looked into the mirror Josie's face stared back at her. She jumped backward with a squeak of alarm.
"A locked door won't keep me out, D.J."
"Don't do that!" D.J. stepped forward and shouted at the mirror. "Get out of there! You're going to drive me insane, if I'm not already." D.J. stalked out of the bathroom, yanking off her clothes and throwing them in a heap in the corner. She tugged on a nightshirt and climbed into bed, turning the lights off with more force than necessary to do the job.
